Popular blogs: Pop Culture!

August 1, 2008 – 10:58 am by Amy Stringwell

It’s no surprise that some of the most popular blogs and frequently author-updated websites are about pop culture. Mass media usually dictates what we find appealing and crave to see more of. In most 20-something’s lives, particularly females, this means gossip. These blogs make this often celebrity-based info available 24/7. In the recent past, gossip of this kind had to trickle down the grapevine into tabloid magazines. Now, we see it as it happens. Photos are posted instantaneously, and criticism about the latest celebrity car accident or publicly drunken heiress can be made immediately. I’m not one to condemn these addictive sites though, as I am quite a fan of several.

One of my favorite pop culture news sources is bestweekever.tv, a blog that is an extension of the VH1 show. Various contributors give insight into what’s going on with celebs, using humor and subtle, sometimes inside, jokes. They also mix in a large amount of obscure gadgets and viral videos floating around on the web, just in case the celebrity gossip isn’t your thing.

A very popular site with nearly identical content is PerezHilton. This one-man show has become a phenomenon. I’ve found his site to be the most concise dish of pop culture news. I’ve frequented this site for about 3 years, and his site has clearly evolved. His power is now palpable. A single post about a recording artist can jumpstart a career, as it did for Katy Perry. Perez posted her hit “UR So Gay” and she has now sky rocketed to the top, reigning number one for 6 weeks on the billboard charts with her smash song “I Kissed a Girl” from her debut album. The cheerfully flamboyant, hot pink site’s background is now frequently filled with advertisements for shows such as “The Hills” or “Gossip Girls” or products like Svedka Vodka that no doubt make Perez a ton of money. He has also begun integrating posts about charitable foundations you can contribute to. Writing about celebrities has no doubt made him a celebrity unto himself, telling you just how far a blog can go to further a career, or a hobby.
