Media Socialist is a blog about, and a testing ground for, social media online.

That means we're gluttons for blogs, social networks, social bookmarks, wikis, user-generated video, photo-sharing, and everything Web 2.0.

If I engage in social media, does that make me a Media Socialist?
Yes, in a sense. Socialism is a political structure where the public, rather than rich corporations, control social systems, like the media. New web technologies, like blogs and social networks, have allowed the public to move into a realm of message production and distribution that once was reserved for traditional media like newspapers and television stations.

But I don’t want to be socialist!
Relax. It’s also a very democratic idea. In a democracy, every voice should be heard, and Web 2.0 technology gives almost anyone the ability to share their ideas.

So what’s the point of this site?
There’s a big social media world out there, and we want to help you understand it. We are willing to immerse ourselves in an unnatural amount of social media options, so that we can share our findings. On the blog, we’ll talk about which parts of the social media world are the most useful, intelligently designed, unique, or completely terrible. You can also use our Social Media Catalog to learn more or share your experiences and knowledge. We hope this site will become a resource for those curious about the various social media options out there - what they are, why they’re useful, and how they compare.
